Can target overused muscles like those used in tooth grinding (bruxism) or clenching habits which can cause pain, discomfort and headaches. They can also target hyperactive muscles like those in the lips which can cause a gummy smile.
Gummy smile. Muscles involved with clenching/grinding (bruxism).
Overused or hyperactive facial muscles not only lead to lines and wrinkles developing but also as the muscle increases in size and strength patients will start to suffer from pain, discomfort, neck and headaches, tooth wear and social distress of the appearance.
Patients who have symptoms from clenching or grinding their teeth suffer from what we call temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) which can be particularly difficult to manage if you do it during the day. However, there are a variety of treatment options available which is why it is vital that we see you for a consultation prior to treatment.
Whether you clench or grind your teeth at night or during the day, overuse of the muscle leads to tooth wear, headaches, neck pain and large cheeks. There are a variety of treatments available for this problem which is why having a consultation prior to treatment is vital.
One way of reducing the activity of these overused or hyperactive muscles is to use a small dose of botulinum toxin or a brand such as botox®, azzalure, bocouture, dysport and vistabel.
By reducing the strength of the muscle we reduce the symptoms that you get with the overactivity e.g. jaw ache, headache, neck pain, excess gum showing when smiling. When we treat the muscle that you use when clenching/grinding your teeth it will also lead to the muscle shrinking in size and may also cause facial slimming.
